Ahead of Emerald City’s debut, NBC has released two new sneak peeks to whet our appetite for the upcoming 10-episode event fantasy series.

A modern (and much more adult) take on The Wizard of Oz from visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Fall, Immortals), Emerald City stars Adria Arjona (Person of Interest) as a modern Dorothy Gale and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) as The Wizard. Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Dracula, The Raven) plays the new and improved version of the Scarecrow (he even has a name: Lucas), and the show also puts fresh new spins on the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, Toto (now a K9 police dog), Glinda (Joely Richardson), the Wicked Witch of the West (Ana Ularu) and a boatload of Oz characters.

In Singh’s version gone are the 1939 movie’s ruby slippers (which were silver in L. Frank Baum's tale, as you know); instead, Dorothy ends up wielding some kind of powerful bejeweled ruby gloves (for lack of a better word). Magic has been banned from the land, D’Onofrio’s Wizard now controls Oz through science, and there are some very cool steampunk-looking mechanized creatures (including the flying monkeys). Also a huge departure from the classic story: Glinda runs an orphanage and West a brothel (?!) because the witches have been made redundant. Guys, we’re so not in Kansas anymore.

In the blink of a tornado's eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and a K9 police dog are swept into a world far removed from our own - a mystical land of competing realms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. Starring Vincent D'Onofrio (Daredevil, Jurassic World) as the guileful Wizard and directed by the visionary Tarsem Singh across three European countries, this is Oz completely reimagined - a place where familiar characters show up in fresh, unexpected ways, and where an unsuspecting young woman holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands. And as Dorothy navigates this dangerous world and uncovers her true destiny, we'll see there's no place like... Oz.

Emerald City will debut on Jan. 6 on NBC following the Season 6 premiere of Grimm. Dig into the "first look" sneak peeks below, and let us know if you'll be heading to Oz when the show premieres in the New Year.
