Showtime has released some cool new character posters and a behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming second season of last year's hit horror series, Penny Dreadful.

Season two sees the return of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Sembene (Danny Sapani). Season-one guest star Helen McCrory’s Madame Kali has been promoted to series regular, and so has Simon Russell Beale as Ferdinand Lyle. Madame Kali will be season two’s main villain. Joining them are Patti Lupone, who will be a figure from Vanessa’s past, Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard detective, Sarah Greene as Madame Kali’s daughter Hecate and Jonny Beauchamp as a “man with a singular past.”

Here’s a lengthy synopsis (via Screen Fad) for season two:

Season two of Penny Dreadful finds Vanessa reveling in the connection she shares with Ethan – a connection made possible by the inner darkness they share. For years, Vanessa felt like a complete outsider due to her affliction, as if no one would ever or could ever fully understand her because of it. That loneliness forced her to retreat inward and to avoid making herself vulnerable for fear of being hurt, for fear of someone learning the ugliness that latched ahold of her soul and refused to let go. But with Ethan, she’s found the kindred spirit that can help her fully accept her condition; he is someone who she might be able to lean on in ways that she’s never relied on another person, so any thought she might have given getting rid of her darkness has fully dissipated. In its place is a newfound resolve to keep her darkness in her life and to use it to further grow her relationship with Ethan, no matter what Sir Malcolm has to say about it. But will Malcolm stand for Vanessa and Ethan wallowing in what pulls them toward the dark side?
