This Cloverfield fan film ‘proof of concept’ deserves a spot in Bad Robot lore

Megan Stambler has remained a faceless name within J.J. Abrams’ extended Cloverfield universe, getting nothing more than a mention in 10 Cloverfield Lane, as well as the Cloverfield-based Alternate Reality Game (ARG). But one fan is going to impressive lengths to demonstrate that Megan, the daughter of 10’s Howard Stambler, deserves her own story as a grown-up.

Digital artist Greg Strasz and a team of pretty dedicated friends have put together a five-minute fan film simply titled MEGAN, introducing the enigmatic title character as an adult who comes face to face with a mysterious government type who seems to be calling the shots from behind the scenes (sound familiar?)

As you can see from the clip, MEGAN doesn’t try to resolve everything it throws in the air; rather, it’s all about setting up what’s to come.

Strasz himself says setting up a bigger plot is the whole point, describing MEGAN as a “proof of concept” for a deeper exploration of the story he’s put forward. At its heart, MEGAN is also simply a fan film; a “tribute,” says Strasz, “to Bad Robot’s Cloverfield Universe, considering much inspiration was taken from Cloverfield (2008) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), as well as the franchise’s websites, mangas, marketing campaigns and the online ARG (alternate reality game).”

The clip is certainly impressive from a technical and effects point of view, and the presence of a robust ensemble cast invigorates the short with a vitality that’s often lacking in labor-of-love projects created on a shoestring budget.

But we still don’t know much about the next actual Cloverfield installment — which we’ll apparently have to keep referring to as Cloverfield 4, since Abrams has said that his upcoming Overlord movie has no ties to the Clover-verse. In the meantime, check out the trailer and let us know — does MEGAN put forward any ideas you’d hope to see Abrams tap for inclusion in Cloverfields yet to come?
