Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi features a number of delights. One of them is the stars who finally got their moment simply by being cast in the film. Kelly Marie Tran was cast as a Resistance mechanic named Rose Tico, and became a star.
Rose is one of the most pivotal characters in the latest Star Wars installment, and it's in large part due to her heart and her enthusiasm and her courage. She's a major part of the future of the saga, and a new featurette details that for us.
The official Star Wars YouTube channel has been posting behind-the-scenes features for several weeks now. The latest focuses on Tran and how writer/director Rian Johnson made the decision to cast her as Rose. When Tran got far enough to do a "chemistry read" with star John Boyega (Finn), Johnson watched her with delight and declared that Tran was "the character I had in my head when I was writing. It was like she showed up to read."
According to Johnson, Tran and Boyega — who spend much of the film together — had instant chemistry.
"One of the many reasons why Kelly was right for the part was seeing her and John spark off of each other," he said.
The full video details parts of Tran's audition process, and even shows her initial work with Boyega as she auditioned. By the time it all came true, and she was really a part of Star Wars, she was overwhelmed.
"So many people wish for something like this," she said. "I still can't believe I'm doing it."
