This new Star Wars alien might be the slickest Beastie Boys homage in history

With a few months until release, the action figure tie-ins for the new Star Wars film seem to be one of the best sources for fresh intel. Turns out one of the new Resistance pilots is also Licensed to Ill.

A new action figure gives us our best look yet at the alien pilot Ello Asty, though it's the little details that might be the coolest thing about this character. The Aubresh writing on his helmet reportedly says “Born to Ill,” which led io9 to take a closer look at his name. Take a moment, and add a couple of letters. (H)Ello (N)Asty, aka the title of the Beastie Boys’ 1998 album. Well played, J.J.

It’s worth noting Star Trek fans will likely remember that the Beastie Boys tune “Sabotage” had a nice cameo in Abrams’ first film, so it stands to reason the director is a fan of the group’s work. But this might be one of the slickest homages yet.

As for Ello, the character is described as a talented but reckless pilot. We can't wait to see a bit more of him.
