SPOILER WARNING: Possible Avengers: Infinity War spoilers swing freely below!

Ever since Hela shattered Thor’s trusty hammer Mjolnir like a piece of glass in Thor: Ragnarok, we’ve been wondering what the God of Thunder would do for weaponry when he reteamed with Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. Now, thanks to a leaked Infinity War toy image, we may have our answer as to what Thor will be wielding, and it may have some surprising MCU roots.

According to a recent Reddit thread, here’s a “new look at Thor and his weapon via promo art/merchandise”:

Okay, take a closer look at this screenshot from the 18-second mark of the Infinity War Super Bowl spot

Whoa! We always knew Groot was willing to lend a hand to the cause of the just (or at least semi-just), but we didn’t know he’d do so literally. Granted, as you can see in the screenshot, it doesn’t look like it’ll be a long-term loan.

This would also mesh with the same spot’s tease of seeing Thor hitching a ride in deep space from the Guardians of the Galaxy. But it still doesn’t explain where the rest of the weapon is from, though CBR suggests the axe looks a lot like Beta Ray Bill’s, a character Marvel head Kevin Feige confirmed was originally in Ragnarok, but was cut.

"There was a Beta Ray Bill ... He was in it a little bit more and it just didn’t do justice. And the feeling is, if you can’t do it justice, do it later," said Feige. So perhaps the later he’s referring to has something to do with Thor’s weapon in Infinity War?

Perhaps that's a stretch. And maybe we should keep this all at arm's length for now, since nothing is actually confirmed or official. But hey, there may be a leaf of something here. And even if it all turns out to be a tall tale, at least it’s fun to think about, right?

We'll know soon enough when Avengers: Infinity War opens wide May 4.
