Believe it or not, the live-action films set in the Half-Life and Portal video game universe are still in development. So don't give up hope just yet.
Gabe Newell, with video game developer Valve, recently participated in a Reddit AMA where he was asked about the long-gestating Half-Life and Portal film projects (which could be one film, or two films -- it's currently undefined). We heard a few years back that J.J. Abrams was working with the developer on crafting a film blueprint, and Newell said "Yep,” that's still the plan — and "They’re coming," in regards to the development process.
Though they're not the biggest properties in the zeitgeist these days, Half-Life and Portal are still gigantic video game franchises with a ton of film potential. Half-Life is a classic sci-fi story, while the stunning visuals alone would make Portal a fantastic fit for a tentpole release (just see Dan Trachtenberg's 2011 short film based on Portal as a proof of concept for how cool this could be).
Are you glad to hear these projects are still on the table? Do you think they could be worth the wait?
