Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the latest installment of the Disney-era sequel trilogy, is a film still surrounded by mystery. As with its predecessor, The Force Awakens, there are huge chunks of plot that we clearly won't be able to uncover until we see the film, which is probably the way it should be. Still, there are plenty of things to decode in the film's latest trailer, which debuted tonight during ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast.
The theme of the trailer is largely the mirrored journeys of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Both are incredibly strong in the Force, and both are now staring down their respective mentors. But something's not right here: Luke (Mark Hamill) is actually scared of the raw power Rey has, because he's seen it in Kylo before, and it ended his journey to rebuild the Jedi Order. For his part, Kylo is determined to erase the past and pave a new path forward, which leads to the trailer's most moving moment: a space battle confrontation between him and his mother, General Leia (the late Carrie Fisher).
Then there's the shocker that comes at the end, as Rey declares she needs someone "to show me my place in all this," and Kylo stretches out his hand. He offered in the last film to train her, and now it seems she might be taking him up on that.
Oh, and there are also Porgs.
There's obviously still plenty left to decode in this film, and no doubt fan theories will be flying everywhere in the wake of this trailer's release. For the moment, though, let's just be excited that we got some thrilling new footage.
