The Big Blue Bug of Justice is officially back in action.
Amazon Studios has pulled the trigger on a handful of new shows, and Ben Edlund’s reboot of The Tick has received a full season order. No word on an exact episode order, though we’d guess the half-hour dramedy will probably clock in at around 13 or so installments. The series is slated to make its debut in 2017. If you want to get a feel for what Edlund is cooking up, the pilot episode is available now on Amazon. The streaming service typically judges its pickups on interest from the pilot release, so it stands to reason The Tick did pretty well.
The series stars Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Griffin Newman (Vinyl), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion). The Amazon version is a more serious, but still slapstick, take on Edlund’s cult-hit comic tale about a dimwitted hero (The Tick) and his anxious partner (Alfred). The larger narrative looks to follow the duo’s investigation into a mysterious baddie who was long thought to be dead.
Along with The Tick, Amazon also picked up Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which stars the action star (Van Damme, that is) as an exaggerated version of himself who has since retired — but might end up pulled back into the action. The comedy drama I Love Dick, about relationship troubles, also scored a series order.
Are you glad to see The Tick revival move forward? What’d you think of the pilot?
