“This place isn’t normal.”

Yeah, join the club, Orphelin Bay residents.

It’s looking like Siren won’t be the only dark drama about mercreatures anymore. In the first ominous and haunting teaser for Tidelands, the first Australian Netflix original series, Cal McTeer (Charlotte Best) realizes that everything she thought she knew turns out to be a lie.

After ex-con Cal returns home to the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay after serving time, the body of a local fisherman washes ashore, putting the town of Orphelin Bay’s clandestine relationship with drug smuggling on public display. So, Cal must uncover the town’s secrets, while investigating a commune of outcasts who live in a hidden pocket of Orphelin Bay — a group of beautiful and dangerous half-Siren/half-human “Tidelanders.”

Although the series is a fantastical thriller, the teaser doesn’t have so much in the way of the fantastical (though there is that shot of one woman making water flow upwards at the 25-second mark). But it more than makes up for that with a plethora of thrills.

Elsa Pataky (Fast and the Furious) stars as Adrielle Cuthbert, leader of the Tidelanders, along with Aaron Jakubenko (Spartacus: War of the Damned) and Peter O'Brien (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), among others.

Tidelands comes to Netflix Dec. 14.
