We’re still waiting to hear much of anything about Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange adaptation, but some new casting news definitely has us intrigued about the direction director Scott Derrickson is taking things.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) is in talks to play The Ancient One in Doctor Strange. It’d be a fascinating new twist on the character, who is essentially Strange’s mentor, tasked with training folks to become the next Sorcerer Supreme.
The studio was initially looking for a male actor (the character is traditionally male in the comics) but decided to rethink the direction and is now high on Swinton for the role. She’s one heck of a talented actress, and kind of otherworldly in her own right ... and after Guardians of the Galaxy scored Glenn Close, we’d love to see Swinton join up the mystical side of the Marvel universe.
The Doctor Strange film will star Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, a surgeon who loses the use of his hands and turns to magic in an effort to repair the damage. Much as Thor brings the Norse/fantasy angle to the Marvel lore, Doctor Strange is the publisher’s magic/sorcery hero.
Doctor Strange is set to open on Nov. 4, 2016. Would you like to see Swinton sign on?
