The two teasers released for Toy Story 4 thus far introduced us to three new playthings: Forky (Tony Hale), Ducky (Keegan-Michael Key), and Bunny (Jordan Peele). In addition to these new toys, another new character will be voiced by Keanu Reeves, according to Buzz Lightyear himself, Tim Allen.
Allen let this slip during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, stating:
"Keanu Reeves has got a great part that," he said. "Actually, a little inside story. Even he said—gentle, wonderful guy that he is—'This sounds too much like Buzz Lightyear.' And his character does have an edge to that. ... So we calmed him down a little bit and they reminded me, his toy's only that big [put thumb and forefinger close together]."
We suspect Reeves will be playing some sort of grizzled explorer action figure that mirrors his roles in The Matrix and John Wick. It's the only way he can stand up to a guy like Lightyear, despite his tiny stature.
"They really will surprise you with the toys they come up with," Allen added.
The Last Man Standing actor also weighed in on the emotional resonance of the movie, which sounds to be a million times more powerful than the ending of Toy Story 3.
"The last scene of that movie, I couldn't even get through it. It was so emotional," said Allen. "It's a 'Scarlet, [frankly] I don't give a damn' moment," he added. "It is so good. These guys are geniuses. It's so deep and moving and a wonderful plot."
More importantly, the franchise has turned Allen and Tom Hanks (voice of Woody) into the best of friends in real life, too.
"We've become really good pals because of Toy Story. We go out to these weird, like, old lady luncheons," he continued, also offering up a comparison between Woody and Buzz's, uh, "family jewels," shall we say.
"Woody's a cowboy with no groin. Buzz has got all his stuff hidden, so you don't know what's going on."
Toy Story 4 unboxes itself in theaters on June 21, 2019.
