It’s hard to imagine anyone but Chris Evans in the role of Captain America, but John Krasinski (who is set to star as Jack Ryan in the new 10-episode Amazon TV series) may have come *this close* to playing the Star Spangled Man With a Plan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Krasinski was on the short list for the role, along with Ryan Philippe and Sebastian Stan, and was rumored to be the favorite until Chris Evans would go on to nab the role in March 2010 and crush it in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.
In a recent interview with Conan O’Brien, the 13 Hours actor opened up about how close he came to nabbing the role of Steve Rogers, until he saw a super-buff Chris Hemsworth parading around as Thor during Krasinski’s Cap screen test.
“In my head, I got the part [laughs]. It was a big deal for me because first of all, I love those Marvel movies, I love superheroes, I love imagination. So when they asked me to test, they actually allowed me to put on the suit, I was on a set, it was all very interesting. I feel like as I'm talking about this someone from Marvel [mimes shooting a blow dart]....I'm actually not supposed to talk about this... but the only bummer of it was as I was putting on the suit and thinking this is so amazing; I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself - [keep in mind] I wasn't 13 Hours [John Krasinski] yet. I felt pretty good. And all of a sudden, Chris Hemsworth walks by in his Thor suit and went, 'Hey, mate.' And I went, 'I'm good. This is stupid [mimes taking off pants]. I'm not Captain America, it's fine.”
What do you think? Would you have loved to see John Krasinski wield the shield as Captain America?
