Fans of NBC’s Timeless managed to save the series from cancellation once again, this time for a two-hour finale special. Now, the hard-fought wrap-up story is finally gaining some momentum.

The writers room of the series took to Twitter to alert fans that the story pitch for the two-hour finale has officially been approved by NBC and Sony Television, so now the series finale can move forward with production. The creatives also confirmed the big finale is on track to air as a two-hour special this December on NBC.

The series, which stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett, focuses on a team of time travelers bouncing around the time stream tasked with stopping a mysterious conspiracy. It took history seriously and managed to tell fun stories in the process and quickly became a critical hit and adored fan favorite over the past two years — though that fervent adoration never translated into big ratings. NBC pulled the plug after Season 1, but a “Save Our Show” campaign and some last minute negotiations brought it back for a second season.

When big ratings didn’t follow the reprieve, NBC axed the show again — but another fan campaign kept all parties at the table long enough for a two-hour finale to get approval. It’s a good thing, too, because Season 2 ended on one heck of a cliffhanger.
