After a lull from the spotlight, new details have now surfaced on the planned Spawn movie that is being made by none other than Todd McFarlane — he's the creator of the character, and also the co-founder of Image Comics. McFarlane is teaming up with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, Split) for the new cinematic outing, which McFarlane will also direct.

In a new interview with, McFarlane provided an update on the production, saying the planned R-rated film will be "dark and heavy" — and not a "superhero movie."

"We just signed off on the script, and are going into budgeting," he explained. "We're also having our casting meeting... It will be dark and heavy, serious, R-rated. It won't be a superhero movie."

Instead, he said that the film will be more in line with a "supernatural thriller."

While the movie will be the latest comic-book adaptation taking advantage of the R rating (Deadpool, Logan), McFarlane made it clear that the elements that may earn Spawn that rating will be in a very different vein. According to him, "we're talking trauma, true trauma, as serious as possible."

He also reveals a telling quality about the character in this big-screen version: Spawn will be silent. "Spawn doesn't say a word the entire movie, and it's the same way with Jaws," he said, drawing parallels between the two films. "It's about the sheriff and the people, chasing the ghost." He also reveals that Spawn isn't even the lead in the movie — the lead role "is a cop."

This may be McFarlane's first film as a director, but he's got a good ally in Blumhouse: The production house knows a thing or two about turning modestly budgeted films by rookie directors into runaway hits. Its previous smash, Get Out, had a budget of $4 million (Spawn's will be $11 million) and was helmed by first-time director Jordan Peele. That film went on to be pretty successful
