The character of Spawn is one of the biggest indie characters in all of comics, but the supernatural hell-hero once had a much more sci-fi origin story.

Comic creator Todd McFarlane has opened up his vault to reveal an extremely early design for Spawn — dating back to when he was just a kid — that shows the earliest concept for the character was a sci-fi story, with Spawn hailing from beyond the stars. The suit is clean and cool blue and red, complete with a space helmet. Because, you know, it was a sci-fi character. McFarlane said he leaned into the blue in this early design because space is cold, but in redesigning and reimagining the character to the version we know today, he added in a good bit more black and red (because, you know, hell).

So, what we’re hearing is that it’s high time for a “What If …” story that imagines Spawn as an alien hero, right?
