There’d been rumblings that Sony wanted to make a Venom solo film, and the studio has locked in a major star to take on the iconic Spider-Man baddie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Hardy (The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road) has signed on to star in the project, which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). No word on the story, though the report notes Hardy is most likely playing Eddie Brock. The script was written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Fleischer obviously has the chops to balance drama, action and levity, so it'll be interesting to see what he brings to this one.

Sony already has a release date locked in for October 5, 2018, so it’s no surprise we’d be hearing about casting and production news about now-ish. As for the Hardy hire, he’s a solid A-lister for Sony to build a spinoff franchise around. But there are still a lot of questions. Namely: How much will this connect (if at all) to the new version of Spidey we’re enjoying so much in the marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

Along with Venom, Sony is also developed a Silver Sable/Black Cat spinoff.

What do you think of Hardy’s hire? You looking forward to this one?
