Tom Hiddleston lets some surprising news slip about Thor: Ragnarok

Loki's future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got a little murkier.

Speaking with the Daily Beast, British actor Tom Hiddleston -- who became a star thanks to his first turn as the God of Mischief in 2011's Thor -- was asked about playing Loki for a fourth time (following The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World) in Thor: Ragnarok, which begins shooting in June. His response:

"Thor 3 will be cool because I’ve not done it for four years. I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate."

Did Hiddleston say what we think he said -- that Thor: Ragnarok will mark his last time playing Loki? After all, it's been widely assumed that he'll make an appearance in at least one half of the two-part Avengers: Infinity War, which the Daily Beast also pointed out. Hiddleston:

"I don’t know! Honestly, I don’t know! They haven't got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

Fair enough. While all the major Marvel actors are signed to contracts for multiple films (anywhere from six to nine), they're not always told in advance which movies they're actually going to appear in -- that usually doesn't become clear until the finished script is turned in. With Captain America: Civil War just about ready to come out, the same team -- directors Anthony and Joe Russo and screenwwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely -- will now presumably get down to serious business on Infinity War and hash out who exactly will be in the epic close to Marvel's Phase Three cycle of movies.

It's been speculated for a while that Loki will indeed be part of Infinity War, most likely as a right-hand man to big bad Thanos. That role was filled in the "Infinity Gauntlet" comic-book arc by Mephisto, but since it's not likely that Marvel will introduce that character into an already sure-to-be-crowded movie(s), it would make perfect sense for Loki to step into that job.

So, while it's always possible that Thor: Ragnarok (which comes out Nov. 3, 2017) could be Hiddleston's last hurrah as Loki, it's more likely that no one has told him yet whether he's in Infinity War. Do you think Loki should encore in that big Avengers blowout, or should Thor: Ragnarok be the last stand for the MCU's best and most popular villain to date?
