Well, we certainly didn't get a heads-up about this secret cameo.

Fans of The Orville will no doubt be celebrating the exciting news that the sci-fi dramedy has just been renewed for a second season. But did any of you eagle-eyed viewers spot a familiar face that appeared on the show recently, from none other than horror legend Tom Savini?

The episode was shown last month on the Fox show, but it seems some peeps missed the fact that it was Savini, despite the actor posting a still on his own Instagram account on Oct. 13 saying: “So I had a cameo on the latest episode of The Orville. Actually my severed head did.”

Savini’s head was used as part of a ritual scene in the show, suggested by his friend Howard Berger, who works on the special makeup effects team, according to another Instagram post.

Savini is of course an award-winning special makeup effects creator himself, as well as a talented actor, stuntman, and director. He created the special effects and makeup for Friday the 13th (parts I and IV) and directed Night of the Living Dead, the 1990 remake of George A. Romero's 1968 Night of the Living Dead.

His work as a stuntman includes appearances in Dawn of the Dead, Knightriders, From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror, Machete, Django Unchained, and Machete Kills. He can next be seen playing himself in the upcoming horror film Road Trip of the Dead.

Seth MacFarlane’s Star Trek-inspired yarn has been steadily growing a solid fan base since it first started airing in September. There’s no word yet on whether Season 2 will be a 13-episode affair like the first, or any other juicy details at this stage.
