Adult Swim’s Toonami block surprised fans with a stealth premiere of the long-awaited FLCL: Alternative.
Longtime fans of Adult Swim know to expect a televised April Fools experience. Whether it’s a Rick and Morty marathon or another airing of the cult favorite The Room, the network is known for shaking things up on April 1.
To the surprise of many, or few, Adult Swim’s Saturday night animation block Toonami arrived more than ready for the day, not only premiering the third season of FLCL, previously expected in September 2018, but also airing Masaaki Yuasa’s 2004 film Mind Game. But they took it a step further: The entire night was exclusively Japanese.
From FLCL to Mind Game to Toonami’s regular rotation of HunterXHunter, Space Dandy, Naruto, Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure and more. Every program on the network aired in its original Japanese audio with English subtitles. Even its eponymous hosts TOM and SARA were a part of the ruse, abandoning the regular voices of Steven Blum and Dana Swanson for Japanese actors.
Adult Swim’s on-air’s senior vice president and head of Toonami, Jason DeMarco, confirmed the surprise on Twitter.
He also made it clear that if you missed the premiere, you’re out of luck. You won’t be seeing it streamed or televised again until later in the year.
Fan were delighted at the surprise and took to Twitter to notify the world of the stealth premiere.
Expect the premiere of FLCL: Progressive this June and FLCL: Alternative in September, fully dubbed, on Adult Swim’s Toonami.
