We're just two days away from the season finale of Game of Thrones. The episode will be the longest in the series' history, marking the end of a seventh season full of mayhem, twists, and epic battles. It's been a season in which not even leaks of the episodes in advance could challenge the show's ratings, and thanks to the huge game-changer at the end of the last episode the stage is set for an anything-can-happen sort of finale.
This hype is not lost on HBO, and the network has spent the last week capitalizing on the anticipation via social media. Friday morning, though, the campaign to make sure we won't forget that Winter Is Here (as if we would) hit another level. Kristofer Hivju, better known to fans as Tormund Giantsbane (aka Mr. Brienne of Tarth), was featured in this video on the official Game of Thrones Facebook page.
No, this is not some kind of crazy plot twist. It's actually part of a new augmented reality toy for the show (described in the video's description) that allows fans to transform into the Night King. It's a predictable bit of social media marketing, but it also actually ties in quite well to the tone of Thrones as we head into the finale. At the moment, the Night King feels like he's on top of the world, and anyone could fall prey to his wintry magic. Game of Thrones season finales always carry with them a "Who will die next?" vibe, but this time around there's an added twist: Some characters might die, but which ones will stay dead?
Game of Thrones airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
