Delays from scandal at the top and plenty of script trouble won’t stop Pixar’s premiere franchise, it’ll only slow it down. Now, with Toy Story 4 on its way in the next six months or so, fans of the groundbreaking animated films are getting a taste of what comes next post-trilogy.
The sequel, from Inside Out’s Josh Cooley and a stable of writers featuring Rashida Jones and more, was originally angled to be a romantic comedy between Woody and Bo Peep, with almost all the original cast returning. The first trailer, however, seems to give a different impression. A much sillier, strangely deeper impression.
Check it out:
Not too romantic. It seems that in a post-Andy world, there’s a little trouble in paradise -- trouble that reflects the same existential struggle that Woody and Buzz faced in the original film. A toy made from a spork, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners has trouble accepting he’s a toy and, well, he screws up everyone’s fun.
But what is a toy? What is the line separating child’s plaything and inanimate object in this world? It’s almost a certainty that Toy Story 4 will coax out some tears while answering these questions.
The official synopsis explains that "Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called 'Forky' to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy." We've got a road trip, folks. And judging by the new poster, things may not be looking so good for Woody after this ride down the dusty trail:
Toy Story 4 hits theaters next summer, on June 21, 2019.
