Step into the light... or the shadows, with a brand-new trailer for Freeform's upcoming Marvel series Cloak & Dagger. Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt play Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two young people who form a romantic bond, gain superpowers, and become the titular crime-fighting duo. As Cloak, Tyrone can teleport, become intangible, or tap into the Darkforce, while Tandy, as Dagger, can use light by turning it into daggers or healing others. The entire dynamic between the two is based on the juxtaposition of light and dark.
Check out the two in action in the following teaser trailer:
Fate keeps bringing these two people together and they realize that they're supposed to use their powers in tandem. However, Tandy notes that the universe is also tearing them apart. When it comes to actual superpowers, we finally get to see Cloak use his wispy teleportation abilities while Dagger uses her eponymous knives of light. The plot is still not certain, but we do know these two lead somewhat tragic lives, which can be remedied by the presence of each other's company.
Marvel's official Twitter account teased the trailer yesterday with a poster of Tandy and Tyrone on top of a building with the neon Roxxon Corp sign seen in the show's first trailer.
This company has existed in the Marvel Universe since 1974, when it was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Sal Buscema. Beginning as a massive oil conglomerate, the corporation turned into a shady organization responsible for conducting experiments on human guinea pigs in an attempt to create super soldiers. In the Ultimate Marvel comics, Roxxon was responsible for giving Tandy and Tyrone their powers along with Spider-Woman and Bombshell.
Given this history between Roxxon and the two heroes, it looks as if the show will pursue the Ultimate Marvel origin of Cloak & Dagger. If not, it will certainly play a sinister part in Season 1 in some way or another. Why else would the company be so heavily featured in the advertising materials?
The first episode was recently shown at SXSW, and early reactions were very positive, although some pointed out that it doesn't necessarily break new ground. Created by Joe Pokaski, Cloak & Dagger premieres on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) June 7.
