He’s the director fans love to hate, but there’s a reason he’s a box-office staple. Michael Bay’s movies make money. Lots of it … and now he’s prepping another massive tentpole.

Though he’s currently producing that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, the Transformers director has now locked up his next directing gig: a mysterious, big-budget adventure thriller. The untitled project was apparently pitched by Bay, and Paramount dug it enough to sign on.

Virtually no story details have been released, though it is apparently described as “a real science adventure thriller with an undersea component,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Bay is loosely attached to direct, and since he came up with the idea, odds are good.

The script is being written by Tom Wheeler (Surface, The Cape) and Robbie Thompson (Supernatural, Human Target). They definitely have some genre and action creds, but not a ton of big-screen action experience. So the jury is still out on that one.

Any guesses about what this project is all about? What is Bay cooking up?
