Trip out on 2001: A Space Odyssey recut as a modern blockbuster trailer

Yesterday would have been Stanley Kubrick's 84th birthday. To celebrate, let's see how his sci-fi opus would fare in today's frantic film market. Here's the 2001 trailer diced up Fincher-style with a driving techno beat. No matter how you slice it, it's still the ultimate trip.

This cool but chaotic redux pairs a piece of music called "Tactical Dominance" by artist Jack Trammell with the mind-warping visuals of the movie maestro's masterpiece. What's amazing is how well it translates to a more modern sensibility a la the recent studio ad campaigns of Inception and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Gone are the waltzes and strings, replaced by a sonic assault toned perfectly to today's fevered tentpole mentality.

So compare the new kid with the '68 original and see which one fires you up most ...
