Guillermo del Toro is one of the hardest-working wizards in the entertainment universe, expertly juggling a full menu of provocative projects in multiple media at any given time. One interesting offering scheduled to launch on Netflix this winter is Trollhunters, a new fantasy animated series from DreamWorks and based on del Toro's wild illustrated children's novel co-written with Daniel Kraus.
Trollhunters follows the adventurous exploits of Jim, a 15-year-old boy who assumes the role of a faithful defender of a tribe of good trolls using the assistance and guidance of an enchanted amulet. The late Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Beyond) delivered the vocal performance for Jim, making it one Yelchin's final screen roles. Del Toro addressed this somber note when discussing the Chekhov actor's work :
“We went through great pains to ensure that his voice is preserved for the series. He was so passionate about it, and he had so much fun doing this.”
New York Comic-Con will be the venue for a screening of the show's first two episodes on Oct. 8. Besides Yelchin, the voice cast also includes Kelsey Grammer, Charlie Saxton, Ron Perlman, Jonathan Hyde, Lexi Madrano, Amy Landecker, Fred Tatasciore and Steven Yeun:
Here's the official synopsis:
The show follows 15-year-old Jim (Anton Yelchin), who is transformed into the Trollhunter, defender of the good trolls, after stumbling upon a magical amulet. While fighting alongside his best friend Toby (Charlie Saxton) and the wise four-armed troll Blinky (Kelsey Grammer), he also must juggle play rehearsal and homework
