By the time it finally shows up in theaters, Deadpool 2 is going to have a hard act to follow. And we’re not just talking about the first huge crowd-pleasing film, but also the sequel’s fantastic marketing.
From Bob Ross to #WalkingDeadpool, Ryan Reynolds and the marketers at Fox have somehow made us all the more ready to see the what will come out of the merc’s mouth next. And these latest TV spots certainly don’t disappoint.
While the first spot features some trailer-repeat footage of the “forward thinking, gender neutral” and slightly “derivative” X-Force team that Deadpool’s compiling to battle Cable (Josh Brolin), there’s also a new bit at the end, starring the very white male Paul… er… Peter (Rob Delaney), who's rather worried about his whiteness…
“I don’t know about this Cable fella, but I guarantee he hasn’t killed as many people as melanoma has,” says Peter, while applying generous dabs of sunscreen to his pudgy, mustachioed face.
Though he’s certainly not the most skilled of Deadpool’s LinkedIn recruits, Peter is shaping up to be the funniest. And his tweets only confirm as much.
The second spot also features some new footage, although the highlight is most assuredly Stripper Deadpool, beautifully clad in high heels and a blonde wig. Perhaps this is where Deadpool’s cabbie Dopinder (Karan Soni) gets those visions of “strong thighs” from. And now we’ve got a better idea where that Flashdance marketing campaign started.
While we’re definitely ready for Deadpool 2 to finally hit theaters May 18, would it be too much to ask for the marketing campaign to go on indefinitely?
