UglyDolls, the latest in weirdo toy reclamation to hit the big screen after Justin Timberlake helped make the Trolls movie a pop-pushing phenomenon, has cast big musical name after big musical name in its quest to replicate its competitor’s success.
With stars like Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton and Pitbull, the film about strange-looking dolls living in a world (Uglyville) that values oddities was always going to have a musical bent, and its first trailer confirms as much.
Clarkson’s Moxy opens the teaser with a self-describing song, which feature’s Pitbull’s rapping, sunglassed, goateed kitten doll, only to introduce the opposing forces of Perfection as the film’s conflict. Yeah, it’s totally bonkers.
Take a look:
When the lovable weirdos meet the lame normal-looking folks, culture clash inevitably occurs. Cue the inspirational songs about loving yourself and celebrating uniqueness!
All of this in the pursuit of a child’s love, so add a little Toy Story into the mix for good measure. Whether this film’s box office fate will lead to the planned multimedia franchise remains to be seen, but with all the elements STXfilms is putting into it, it seems like a recipe for success.
We'll all find out - or at least those with young children - when UglyDolls hits theaters on May 10, 2019.
