We've been waiting for months to see more than a glimpse of the revived X-Files series from creator Chris Carter and stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. It feels like everyone involved, including some of the original show's best writers and actors, is just as excited to make this show as the fans are to finally see it again, and that adds an air of joy to the whole thing that I personally find intoxicating.
Still, until this week, all we'd really seen of the new series were mere glimpses, very brief teasers and set photos. Last night, though, Fox changed that with a two-part trailer reveal during broadcasts of Gotham and Minority Report. All told, it's a little more than a minute of footage, and it still doesn't tell us much, but it does make the whole thing feel a bit more real. Check it out:
UPDATE: Fox finally released their own official version of the trailer, cutting together all of the footage, and it turns out they added a bit more. Now we've got a full two minutes of new X-Files, including our first true look at Joel McHale's character, who's seeking out Mulder in a search for the truth. Check it out:
One thing many fans were wondering about the revival is how Carter and company would tackle the show's ongoing conspiracy themes in an age when everyone carries around the Internet in their pocket, and it seems they're going at it head-on, working in our surveillance culture and our new obsession with drones. Plus, we got some tantalizing glimpses of what looks like a very old alien crash site, and then there's my personal favorite moment: the return of the Cigarette Smoking Man.
The X-Files finally returns in January.
