Former Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev is in talks to star in Sony’s reboot of Flatliners, the new movie directed by Niels Arden Oplev (Mr. Robot, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), with a screenplay by Ben Ripley (Source Code).
According to Deadline, Dobrev — who departed The Vampire Diaries last year after playing Elena Gilbert for six seasons — will join a cast that currently includes Ellen Page (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The report claims the actress will play Marlo, an overachiever who’s the top of her class. Dobrev is the only one who’s been given a character description so far.
Since leaving The CW’s hit vampire show, Dobrev has been quite the busy bee. She’s currently filming xXx: The Return of Xander Cage alongside Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Samuel L. Jackson (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and has recently wrapped filming an indie comedy titled Crash Pad with Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina). The actress is also apparently attached to star opposite Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game) in another indie drama titled Arrivals.
If you guys will recall, the original 1990 sci-fi thriller was helmed by Joel Schumaker (Batman & Robin) and starred Julia Roberts (Mirror Mirror), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Kevin Bacon (The Following) and William Baldwin (Backdraft) as four medical students who start experimenting on themselves with near-death experiences -- with dire consequences (I'm putting this mildly). The reboot will shake things up a bit and, instead of a core cast of three men and a woman (as in the original movie), the new film will feature an inclusive, international cast of two men and three women.
With no official release date slated, filming on Flatliners is set to begin in July, so expect more casting news in the coming weeks, since only three of the core five characters have been cast. What do you think of Nina Dobrev joining Ellen Page and Diego Luna on the Flatliners remake?
