We already knew The CW was prepping a spinoff to The Vampire Diaries, and now one of the potential stars has opened up about the “badass” plans for the project.
Joseph Morgan, who will star in the proposed series as his Diaries character Klaus, talked to Entertainment Weekly about what they have in store for the upcoming backdoor pilot and potential series if the network decides to move forward.
Tentatively titled The Originals, the series would star Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Claire Holt and Charles Michael Davis as vampires in New Orleans. For comparison’s sake, the pitch seems almost like an Angel-like companion show to the Vampire Diaries mothership (not that Diaries could ever compare to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, of course).
Here’s what Morgan had to say about the project:
“I’m terrified I’m gonna say something I’m not supposed to, but there’s some huge, huge transitions and some reveals that will change the character forever…. We’re gonna see some tremendous moments of vulnerability, but he is so, I wanna swear, badass. We’re gonna see him cooler than he’s ever been before. It would be nice, if we were picked up or even possibly during the pilot, to see a little bit of Klaus as the underdog, the one we’re rooting for.
I used to play poker with [Davis] in L.A., so I randomly knew him. He actually won money from me a bunch of times. He’s a really good poker player. He texted me when he was auditioning for it. I’m excited to start it with him, because I feel like I know the dynamic between the two of us works. It’s good to know that that’s something else that works, as well as mine and Gillies’ relationship.”
As one of the few bona fide hits on the network, The CW is keen to keep the Diaries world a big part of the schedule. If the spinoff could pull in similar numbers, it could extend the life of the franchise by at least another half-decade.
We won’t have to wait too long to see what the spinoff has in store, as the backdoor pilot will air as a Vampire Diaries episode on April 25. Do you think The CW needs a few more fanged folk on the schedule?
