Vertigo is bringing the hit Fables series back to life, after wrapping the main run in 2015 at 150 issues. To keep the hits coming, the publisher has announced Everafter: From the Pages of Fables.
The series will be set after the conclusion of the Eisner-winning original, with a new run helmed by writers Matthew Sturges and Dave Justus (Fables: The Wolf Among Us), with artwork by Travis Moore and covers by Tula Lotay. The series will focus on the Shadow Players, a global network of agents—both Fable and mundane—tasked with policing a newly enchanted world and protecting humanity from itself. Some fan favorite characters will also return, including Bo Peep, Peter Piper, Hansel, and Connor Wolf.
Sturges said they’re essentially trying to tell the story that comes after the story, showing how the events of Fables affected that world, and where it went in the wake of the final issue. Justus expanded on that thought in a statement:
"Everafter is a spy thriller featuring a covert-ops team whose mission is to save this newly magical world from itself. The story has a uniquely Vertigo flair, filled with twists, double-crosses, and agents willing to give their lives for (fairy) queen and (goblin) country!"
It’ll be interesting to see how this series turns out, and it’s always a bit risky to try and return to the well with a beloved property (See: Before Watchmen). Sure, it can make some money, but you run the risk of tainting the franchise if the new series fails to reach the same heights. Not to mention the fact that Fables sets the bar unbelievably high anyway, anyway.
The new series is set to hit comic shelves in September.
