Earlier today, we told you that the next best thing to an actual Doctor Who episode was tons of teasers. Now we have something even better—our very first footage from the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special.

The BBC has posted a trailer for its upcoming fall/winter drama season, which also means we've got our very first look at the new, very Scrooge-like, Christmas special.

Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat has said of the upcoming special that:

"This one's incredibly Christmassy. That's true of the previous ones, but I wanted to go for broke. It's easily the most Christmassy thing you'll ever see. It's a huge, sentimental, lovely, jeopardy-driven story. It's the Christmas special I'd like to see. It's like a compilation of every Christmas movie. A big Christmas treat. But that doesn't mean it's without scares, and that doesn't mean it's without heartbreak. It has genuine tragedy in it."

And from what we just saw in the trailer, we are inclined to believe him!

There are two short scenes of interest in the trailer; one with Michael Gambon (whose character, "Older Kazran," seems to be standing in for Charles Dickens' most famous literary creation: Ebenezer Scrooge) by himself, and the other one toward the end where the Harry Potter actor asks, "Who are you?" of the Doctor (Matt Smith). The Time Lord, sitting comfortably in an old-style leather chair and holding up a bunch of old papers, answers back: "I'm the ghost of Christmas Past."

Along with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams), the Doctor Who Christmas Special stars Michael Gambon and opera singer Katherine Jenkins (the blond woman in the white dress), who has an undisclosed role in the episode. The Ghost of Xmas Future or Present, perhaps?

In the trailer, we can also see more of Matt Smith, who will star in Christopher and His Kind (that's the part of the clip that shows him with the Nazi flags) later in the year. Former 10th Doctor David Tennant will star in Single Father, a drama that will air on Oct. 10 in the U.K., while former Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston will star in Accused.

So what do you think? Are you counting down the days until the holiday season?
