It's almost impossible to conceive of a time when CGI effects didn't permeate most of our beloved geek movies, from the moment a stained-glass knight stepped out of a church window in Young Sherlock Holmes in 1985 to the masterful magic conjured up for the recent Hobbit heroics and Marvel superhero romps.   But before computers made the impossible possible, special effects wizards and makeup artists created some stunningly realistic work using practical methods to bring monsters, spaceships and aliens to life.  The folks at Cinefix have compiled their list of the Top 10 Practical Effects of All Time in movies ranging from The Howling and The Thing to Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey, with stop-motion animation, blue screens, animatronics, prosthetics, miniatures and puppetry integrated with expertise and ease into the finished films.

Have a look and see who muscles his way straight into the #1 spot.
