SPOILER WARNING: Tonight's Arrow episode discussed freely below!
One of Arrow’s looming mysteries revolves around the true identity of the Vigilante. Emerging in Season 5, a disguised Vigilante initially targeted the Spooky Crew, a gang of skull-masked criminals robbing banks. His brutal lethal tactics led him to butt heads with Team Arrow. He even attempted to assassinate Mayor Oliver Queen, who he believed was a corrupt politician. Vigilante appeared to vanish – until tonight’s episode, "Deathstroke Returns."
During a confrontation between Black Canary (Juliana Harkavy) and Vigilante (Mick Wingert), her canary cry sent him reeling. The sonic attack also cracked Vigilante’s visor, forcing him to remove his mask and reveal himself to be Dinah Drake’s ex-CCPD partner and lover, police detective Vincent Sobel, a man she believed drug dealer Sean Sonus had killed.
However, the same S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator that granted Dinah her powers also turned Vincent into a metahuman, now obsessed with dishing out lethal justice. During a visit to Arrow’s Vancouver set this week, actress Juliana Harkavy spoke to SYFY WIRE and other reporters about the big bombshell and what it means for Dinah.
“Well, it’s definitely been a little bit of a glitch in Dinah’s path, because now -- in a sense -- not only is she dealing with her past, but she also has her own little secret that she has to decide whether she’s going to keep from the team,” Harkavy said. “So it definitely throws a wrench in her life and game plan.”
“I found out a few episodes in, and I think it was around Episode 3 that [director] James Bamford came and told me, ‘Okay, this is what’s happening,’” she continued. “It was a shock, but it seemed to fit, and I could make it work in my wheelhouse of what is real for Dinah, so I was excited about it. I love the storyline.”
Dinah obviously still harbors feelings for Vincent. As a result, Dinah continues to communicate with him. In addition, she conceals his existence and Vigilante secret from her colleagues, at least for the moment.
“I don't think it's really in Dinah’s nature to keep it for long, but she's going to keep it as long as she feels that she is protecting herself, and I think the team to some extent,” Harkavy noted. “She wants to figure out really what's going on before she says anything, so I hope it’s not too long, but she's going to take her time with it for a second.”
