Vin Diesel finally explains why he's voicing Groot in Guardians

Fans have been dying to know who the heck Vin Diesel would be playing in the Marvel universe, and the answer turned out to be a shocker. So, why Groot?

Diesel had been hinting at talks with Marvel, and finally let the cat out of the bag earlier this week when he briefly posted a picture of Guardians of the Galaxy’s tree-like character Groot on his Facebook page, then yanked it down.

Luckily, Collider was able to catch up with Diesel to ask him about the reveal, and why he signed on to bring the ass-kicking tree to life. The main reason? Because it’s weird (in a good way):

“I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.”

You’ve got to give the guy credit. Sure, he keeps cranking out those crazy Fast and Furious films, but he’s also scratching his sci-fi itch with the upcoming Riddick and now (apparently) Guardians. He's having fun, and you've got to respect that. As for how it’ll work (voice acting, CGI, something else entirely)? We can’t wait to find out.

Are you glad Diesel will be a member of the Guardians?
