Get to your stations, people! We have an ion cannon alert! We repeat, an ion cannon alert!
OK, we’re not talking about firing on Star Destroyers from the planet Hoth with a v-150 planetary ion cannon, but any ion cannon firing is good news as far as we’re concerned, especially when utilized in the first trailer for the sixth season of Voltron: Legendary Defender.
We’re already 45 episodes into Netflix’s original 78-episode commitment to the DreamWorks Animation Television and World Events Productions’ 2016 reboot of the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion. But while things have changed since the 2008 Japanese show, and even more so since the original Voltron: Defender of the Universe cartoon from 1984, one thing remains constant: A giant robot that forms from a team of space cats is always cool.
Season 6 will add seven new episodes, starting in just 10 short days. And judging from the trailer below, it looks like the Paladins of Voltron, aka the space cats, are going to have to come together now more than ever, as they’ll be facing “their most epic battle yet,” according to the official synopsis.
At the very beginning of the trailer, we see newish Emperor Lotor, son and successor of Zarkon, reminding his followers that he’s delivered an age of prosperity to the Galra Empire, a time of “unlimited quintessence” (the planetary energy that powers pretty much everything). Then he notes, as sinisterly as any emperor around, that those “factions that have splintered from the empire will pay for the treachery!”
And that’s when the ion cannon kicks in!
Season 6 isn't all about particle-beam weapons, though. Here's the basic gist of what to expect: Galra’s oppressors are still suspicious of Lotor's alliance with Voltron, and set about invading vulnerable planets across the universe. So, “a hyper-focused Team Voltron” is determined to thwart such invasions, with a “campaign to save millions of lives.” But then our heroic Paladians of Voltron uncover some “troubling” info, and that’s when the battles get truly epic.
Check out the team's epic response and the ion cannon in action when Voltron: Legendary Defenders returns to Netflix June 15.
