Clickbaity crossover comic covers have been a thing almost as long as comics have had covers and characters to bait with. Now two of the most buzzy heroes of the year have met their mashup thanks to a new Marvel series. Black Panther vs. Deadpool released the art for its fourth issue, which shows Deadpool in Black Panther-esque attire sitting atop a throne, flanked by four panthers.
Ears? Claws? What pushed Wade Wilson into the feline costume? Well, according to Marvel’s comic store, the issue won’t come out until the end of January, which gives fans a few months to mull over how the Merc With a Mouth ascended the throne of Wakanda. Ryan Benjamin and Rain Beredo’s cover displays “Panther-Pool” -- as the official solicitation describes him -- after four issues of questing for Vibranium.
T’Challa certainly won’t be pleased by the venture and definitely isn’t gonna be game for Deadpool’s nonsense. The book, written by Daniel Kibblesmith with art by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, will pit the characters against each other, hoping to capture some of the pair’s success at the box office while answering age-old questions like how would the king of Wakanda rid himself of an unkillable nuisance?
When the ridiculous Panther-Pool team-up actually happens, readers will understand how and why Vibranium affects Deadpool so deeply and why exactly the king doesn’t want the super-powerful substance in Wilson’s erratic hands. Well, maybe that last one is obvious.
Black Panther vs. Deadpool #4, the penultimate in the run, hits stores on Jan 30.
