One of the big questions surrounding Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series has been how Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns from apparent death — but apparently Coulson doesn’t know, either. Huh?
Entertainment Weekly has managed to glean a few details about the pilot, and one big one is that Coulson’s resurrection will serve as a season-long mystery. Even stranger? It sounds like Coulson might not even know that he died. According to the report, members of the cast said Coulson must “never know the truth” about his death. Intriguing.
Co-creator Jed Whedon said that mystery is one they want to peel back slowly:
“We can’t wait to pull the curtain back on that. [But] we’re going to take our time.”
Despite all the buzz and hype, aside from a trailer, a few pics and a snippet here and there — we really don’t know a whole lot about this series. It sounds like Whedon is building in more than enough intrigue to distract from the fact that Iron Man and company aren’t there.
Oh, and about those missing heroes? Jed said they’ll tackle that question pretty quickly, as well:
“We plan on trying to weave in between the films and try to make them more rewarding on both ends. In any of these [episodes], you can always ask: ‘Why don’t they just call Iron Man?’ They are aware of each other, but they do have to have their own lives.”
The series is expected to debut this fall, and we’ll hopefully get a boatload of new details next week at San Diego Comic-Con. So, hang tight.
Do you like the idea of building a major mystery around Coulson’s return?
