Wait, the next Friday the 13th might NOT have Jason Voorhees as its killer?

Sorry, Jason. A new Friday the 13th film is hacking and slashing its way through development, but there’s a chance it might not feature the iconic killer fans have come to know and love (and fear).

Producer Brad Fuller dropped some hints about the upcoming horror flick during a chat with Crave Online, and though it's still early in development, he said every option is still on the table — including moving forward without the hulking, hockey-masked psycho Jason Voorhees.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Again, I don’t know because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love [Jason actor] Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream so we’d be lucky to have him.”

If they didn’t include Jason, that’d make for a pretty shocking turn of events. The character has become one of the most iconic killers in pop culture, and has been a part of the franchise for decades. Seriously, can you imagine a Friday the 13th movie without Jason?

Of course, there is a precedent. Going back deep into the franchise’s roots, Jason wasn’t the original Camp Crystal Lake killer — that mantle went to his psycho mommy, Mrs. Voorhees. So who knows? Maybe they’re wanting to go back to the beginning for the franchise’s 13th installment?

There have also been rumblings that the new sequel will be shot in a found-footage style, which has become a popular (if overplayed) option for horror these days. Fuller wouldn’t confirm or deny, but noted that the concept is “something that [they’re] looking at.” But found footage or not, Fuller promised the decision would be dictated by “what the story is.” So who knows?

What do you think? Should the next sequel use the machete to chop out Jason himself?
