We’ve been wondering which direction Marvel will take Daredevil in its second season, and now the Netflix series has added a major (deadly) heavyweight from the comic canon.
Marvel has confirmed that Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal will play Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, in Season 2 of Daredevil. It’ll mark a massive addition to the hit series, and finally reveals Marvel’s plan for the murderous antihero in regard to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some fans might’ve been holding out for a new movie (after the two recent, pre-MCU attempts underwhelmed), but after seeing the gritty tone of Daredevil’s first season, the skull-clad killing machine might be a better fit for the small-screen world.
We don’t know much about how they’ll introduce the character into the Daredevil-verse, but Marvel teases that The Punisher will surface as a vigilante who aims to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results. So perhaps he’s inspired to action by Daredevil’s progress in Season 1 but doesn’t share Murdock’s code of conduct? It could work, and would make for a natural entry point. Also, this would have to mean there’s an eventual Punisher series waiting in the wings down the line, right? This would be an excellent way to test the water for a backdoor pilot.
Bernthal is likely best known for his portrayal of Shane in the early seasons of The Walking Dead. He’s also had memorable roles in Fury and Mob City. The guy is an imposing and intense actor and should be a perfect fit for Frank Castle. Plus, his tenure on The Walking Dead proved the guy knows his way around firearms.
"Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences," said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. "Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same."
Work is ramping up soon on the second season of Daredevil, which will be executive-produced by Doug Petrie (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Marco Ramirez (Daredevil) and Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods). The excellent debut season is streaming now on Netflix (seriously, go watch it).
What do you think of the casting of Bernthal?
