It’s already one of the biggest TV shows on the planet, one of the most popular comic books and a beloved video game series — but now The Walking Dead is coming to haunt your dreams in virtual reality.

Skybound Interactive and Skybound Entertainment are teaming up on a variety of virtual reality projects based around The Walking Dead, designed to put players into the walker-infested world we all know and love. The studios haven’t announced much about what players can expect, but the games promise to “immerse themselves” in the world of the television series, while also featuring a new setting and new characters.

But don’t expect the entire experience to be all about fighting those zombies. Instead, Skybound president of interactive Dan Murray said the focus will be on the interactions among other survivors (much like the show itself, or the Telltale Games series). The undead will be treated more like the weather, according to the report, causing trouble around the edges. And now all we can think of is a zombie-nado. Thanks.

Regardless of the approach they take, the world of The Walking Dead is a terrifying and immersive place that could translate very well to virtual reality. For the most part, creator Robert Kirkman has been vigilant about the games and outside material that ties into his universe. So hopefully The Walking Dead VR will bring its A-game.

No word on which virtual reality platforms the games will land on, but the studio wants to hit all the major players, so PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive seem likely. The first game is scheduled to hit shelves in 2018.
