The Walking Dead FX reel reveals what's practical and what's CGI in the zombie apocalypse

Considering just how many practical effects are used on The Walking Dead, it’s easy to forget a lot of the action still takes place on green screens and with CGI. Here’s the proof.

A new FX reel from Stargate Studios shows off some of their most ambitious effects from the series, and it’s a fascinating peek behind what it takes to build a believable zombie apocalypse. From zombie explosions to padding out those giant hordes, a lot of those visuals are pure movie magic.

Some of the coolest shots revolve around additions and overlays to existing live-action sets; adding everything from more zombies to more blood to burning storefronts and even crashed helicopters. Sure, practical effects guru Greg Nicotero does a kill job with the practical effects and zombie faces, but this is a stark reminder that The Walking Dead owes a lot of its world-building to good ol’ fashioned CGI.
