The war with Negan and the Saviors may have ended, but humanity's only just started to pick up the pieces in AMC's The Walking Dead.
Partaking in an undead Q&A for the show's blog on AMC's website, series showrunner Angela Kang teased a bunch of plot points for Season 9, which bows this fall and is set several months after the events of Season 8. One thing she let slip was that Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) will be gaining an extra defense mechanism in addition to his iconic crossbow.
“Since our characters are being more stingy with their bullets this year, we wanted to make sure Daryl had a good secondary weapon for hand-to-hand fighting (a crossbow is difficult to reload, so it’s not good for quick combat)," Kang said. "Norman helped to custom-design a pair of knives that he can use for two-handed combat. They’re saw-backed Bowie knives with finger rings that allow you to quickly twirl the knives into different positions (you can grip them in either direction).”
The new season will also be bringing back a familiar face, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), just not in the way you'd expect. Carl died last season after being bitten by a Walker, in what was a major emotional turning point for the character's father, Rick (Andrew Lincoln). Nevertheless, the memory of Carl is being kept alive by Rick's romantic partner Michonne (Danai Gurira).
"If you look closely at Michonne’s hair this season, you’ll see she has a small plaid wrap around one of her dreads. That’s a piece of Carl’s shirt, which she’s now wearing to keep his memory close," stated Kang.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead premieres on AMC Sunday, Oct. 7.
