Add this one to the other half-dozen projects Robert Kirkman has in the fire, but the Walking Dead creator is heading to Syfy next — though he’s not bringing the undead with him.

Instead, Kirkman and fellow Dead producer David Alpert are taking a more direct sci-fi slant with their new project Clone, which is based on the comic of the same name currently being published by Kirkman’s Skybound imprint.

The series will follow a retired soldier, Luke Taylor, who discovers a man who burglarized his home is actually a clone of himself. From there, Taylor is drawn into a vast government conspiracy that sees his wife kidnapped, and he must use his combat skills and military contacts to uncover the details of a secret biotech program behind all these shady happenings.

The comic is a nice mix of action, intrigue and sci-fi thrills, and could translate well to the television medium. Plus, it’s Kirkman, so it’ll be interesting to see what he can do with a more pure sci-fi premise. Combine that with the fact that they already have David Schulner and Juan Jose Ryp’s comic to draw on as a template, and this one could be a hit.

No word on if the series will get a pickup, though development has been rolling since last year (before Syfy snatched it up), so the project should be fairly far along at this point.

What do you think? Would you watch a Kirkman-helmed cloning thriller?
