Mo-cap actor extraordinaire Andy Serkis has been breathing life into Caesar since 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. After reprising the role three years later for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Serkis will once again play the iconic simian leader in War for the Planet of the Apes, slated for a July release.

Ahead of the movie’s debut next month, 20th Century Fox has unveiled a new video featurette offering a nifty behind-the-scenes look at Weta Digital’s groundbreaking and visually stunning special effects work being done on director Matt Reeves’ new opus. It features interviews with Reeves, senior vfx supervisor Joe Letteri, co-producer Ryan Stafford and Serkis.

War for the Planet of the Apes also stars Woody Harrelson as the Colonel, Steve Zahn as Bad Ape, Amiah Miller as Nova, Terry Notary as Rocket, Judy Greer as Cornelia, Karin Konoval as Maurice, Devyn Dalton as Cornelieus and Max Lloyd-Jones as Blue Eyes. The movie opens July 14. Here's the official synopsis:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter in the rebooted take on the enduring science fiction franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
