The game you probably play too much of is about to become the movie you'll watch too many times.
Duncan Jones, who has been director for Source Code and Moon, has been tapped to direct the film adaptation of Warcraft. That's right. The franchise that spawned the most addictive MMORPG of all time is on its way to the big screen. Legendary Pictures is bringing the flick to fans, and they'll be co-producing the film with the game's creators at Blizzard.
What kind of film will it be? For now, that is being kept under wraps. It's really anyone's guess, considering that the game combines the fantastical, such as werewolves and zombies, with sci-fi aliens. The real question, though, is whose point of view the story will come from. Typically, orcs are the bad guys in fantasy movies, but Warcraft is no ordinary story, and many people prefer playing as orcs rather than humans.
There's not much info on who'll be in it, though the rumor mill has already churned out Johnny Depp as the possible lead.
Jones and Legendary have a real challenge on their hands. Warcraft is a huge franchise that's been around since the early '90s, so its fans are legion and vary enormously in age and demographic. Plus, making a successful videogame movie (or fantasy movie, for that matter) has never been easy. We're just hoping this doesn't turn into another Super Mario Bros. or Dungeons & Dragons.
