Warner Bros. may have found a director for a LeBron James-led Space Jam 2, The Russo Brothers have bought a prehistoric adventure pitch, and The Spy Who Dumped Me director will helm a YA pilot for Amazon — they're all in this edition of SYFY WIRE’s Development Roundup.
First, The Wrap reports that Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty) is in advanced talks to direct the long-in-development sequel to Space Jam starring LeBron James. If he takes the gig, he’ll be replacing Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin, who had been previously attached to direct.
Space Jam 2 is being developed with James in mind. The Los Angeles Laker just signed a production deal with Warner Bros. and reportedly will need to approve the script by Andrew Dodge before signing on to star.
Other basketball players are expected to make cameos. As for whether Bill Murray will reprise his role from the original film remains to be seen.
The original Space Jam starred Michael Jordan in 1996 and grossed $230 million worldwide.
Nance is an executive producer on the new late-night series, Random Acts of Flyness, which premieres this weekend on HBO.
Meanwhile, Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War) have bought John Brancato’s pitch for The Last Neanderthal, Deadline has learned. The Russo Brothers have acquired the prehistoric adventure story through their AGBO banner.
The Last Neanderthal will be a motion-capture adventure film directed by stunt coordinator Terry Notary. Brancato and Notary co-wrote the story, which is being described as an epic prehistorical tale of survival, revenge, and redemption.
Brancato’s produced scripts include Terminator Salvation, Terminator 3, and David Fincher’s The Game.
And finally, Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me) is attached to direct The Wilds YA pilot for Amazon Studios, SYFY WIRE has confirmed. She will also executive produce.
Co-produced by ABC Signature Studios and written by Sarah Streicher of Daredevil fame, The Wilds centers on an eclectic group of teenage girls who find themselves stranded on a remote island. What they don’t know is that they’ve just become the subjects of an elaborate social experiment. The Wilds explores the struggles of these young women from radically different backgrounds in this survival drama meets the slumber party from hell.
The Wilds' cast includes Mia Healey, Helena Howard, Reign Edwards, and Shannon Berry.
