We don't know about you, but we at SYFY WIRE are huge animal lovers (cats, dogs, ferrets, lions, bears, and all in-between and beyond). We also love all those fantastic beasts that only exist on the big screen, the television screen, or in the pages of our favorite books.

SYFY WIRE's Jackie Jennings takes a look at seven of those mythical creatures and fictional species we wish would exist in real life — even at the risk of towns and gold convoys being burned down to a crisp.

First on our list would be the majestic Hippogriff from the Harry Potter franchise. Like, c'mon, who wouldn't want to ride and pal around with one of those extremely proud (and dangerous) half-horse, half-eagles from the Wizarding World? The next creatures we wish would be real only because we think they are the cutest thing ever are those porgs introduced in the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi.

Other creatures we wish existed for realsies include the direwolves from Game of Thrones (Ghost, where in the seven hells are you?), the Mearas from The Lord of the Rings (because we want our very own Shadowfax, too), as well as the phoenix from Harry Potter.

Now the next creatures on our list may surprise you, but we do give an explanation in the video as to why we would want them monkeying around: the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz.

Last but not least are dragons. From everything. Including and not limited to: Middle-earth, Westeros, Fantastica (from The Neverending Story) and more… you name it. Why? Because dragons are cool.

What other mythical creatures/species would you like to see exist in real life? Did your favorite(s) make the list?
