Next time someone tells you that you’re wasting your time reading comic books, just remind them that it can eventually lead to you getting knighted and a big Netflix deal. At least, that’s how it has worked out for Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar.
Millar has been writing comics since the early '90s, when he burst onto the British comic scene working on stories for 2000 AD, and was quickly taken under the wing of the legendary Grant Morrison. He worked with Morrison on several DC series before making a huge hit following up Warren Ellis on Wildstorm’s The Authority. He went on to be one of the architects of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, and later helmed the publisher’s Civil War mega-event.
In recent years, Millar has focused on his own line of creator-owned titles, which he has dubbed Millarworld. It features titles like Wanted, Kick-Ass, The Secret Service, and many more, most of which were recently picked up by Netflix in the aforementioned deal. And yeah, Queen Elizabeth II inducted him into the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire a few years ago.
Millar’s undoubtedly one of the biggest names in comic books, and with more of his creations heading to big and small screens than ever before, it’s a perfect time to familiarize yourself with his work, which is why our latest 7 Essential video is spotlighting the seven Mark Millar comics that you have to read.
